Install Remote Server Administration Tools on Windows 7 SP1

Remote Server Administrator Tools (RSAT) is not compatible with Windows 7 SP1. If you install Remote Server Administration Tools on Windows 7 SP1 slipstreamed media, you will get following error.

The update is not applicable to your computer

That’s because current RSAT version only supports Windows 7 RTM. To workaround this issue, you can Install Remote Server Administration Tools before installing Windows 7 SP1. The SP1 upgrade will update RSAT to SP1 version. ~~The other option is wait for official release of Remote Server Administrator Tools for windows 7 SP1, which will happen this April.~~

Windows Live Writer 4 New Features

Windows Live Writer is the most popular blog client tool. Microsoft recently released Windows Live Writer 4 as part of new Windows Live Essentials Beta launch. I tried it and it looks great. Here is what’s new.

New Ribbon UI

Live Writer 4 has same Ribbon style menu as Office 2010. Actually this applies to other Windows Live wave 4 products, Live Mail, Photo Gallery etc.

Picture Tool, Photo Album Tools and Video Tools

In Live Writer 4, all options to format a picture are moved to Picture Tool. When you select a picture, format tab of Picture Tool will show up in ribbon menu. You don’t need to switch between different tabs when you add watermark or change picture style.

Photo Album Tools and Video Tools are also really straight forward.

New Default Photo Album Style Squares

A new album style called Squares is added and is the default album template.

View All

A view all link is added to top right next to date option. If you click View all, Live Writer 4 will bring up a floating Post Properties dialog in which you can update all post options supported by your blog app.

Auto Paste URL from clipboard

If you have a link URL on the clipboard, Live Writer 4 will paste it to to web address textbox when you bring up the insert hyperlink dialog. This is the greatest feature I like in Live Write 4.

Auto Correct

In Live Writer 3, thanks to Spell Checker, all misspelled words will be underlined with red line. This is enhanced in Live Writer 4, if you have a obvious typo for example, teh, live writer will automatically correct it to the, this is very similar to Outlook 2010.

Auto Recover

If Live Writer exits unexpected or crashed, next time it’s launched, you will have the option to recover the last post.

Show Log File link

Find Live Write log is pretty easy in wave 4. Just go to About Windows Live Writer dialog and simple click the “show log file” link.

WordPress 3.0 Beta 2 Released

WordPress team has announced WordPress 3.0 beta 2 is shipped. It seems that release candidate will be coming very soon.

CopySourceAsHtml for Visual Studio 2010

CopySourceAsHtml is an add-in for Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 that allows you be able to quickly get your code as HTML from Visual Studio, just like being able to save it as a HTML file from the Save As dialog. It’s very helpful if you frequently post code to blog or send code in email.

I recently switched to Visual Studio 2010 and noticed this plug in is not ready for Visual Studio 2010 yet. Here is how you can get it work for Visual Studio before CopySourceAsHtml owner releases an official update to support Visual Studio 2010.

Download latest CopySourceAsHtml msi and install it

By default it will be installed toC:\Users\\Documents\Visual Studio 2008\Addins
Create a folder named Addins under C:\Users\\Documents\Visual Studio 2010 and copy CopySourceAsHtml.AddIn here.
Modify Line #5 and #9 change 9.0 to10.0
Launch Visual Studio 2010 –> Tools –> Addin Manager, if you see CopySourceAsHtml shows up, then it’s enabled successfully.

6. Now you can select the code and get html by clicking Copy As Html

This is an example. CopySourceAsHtml also provides options to show/hide control line number, word wrap and so on.

Difference between Chrome Versions

People might get confused what is the difference between Chrome channels. According to http://dev.chromium.org/getting-involved/dev-channel

Stable channel. Everyone is on the Stable channel when they first install Google Chrome. The Stable channel is updated with features and fixes once they have been thoroughly tested in the Beta channel. If you want a rock solid browser but don’t need the latest features, the Stable channel is for you.
Beta channel. People who like to use and help refine the latest features subscribe to the Beta channel. Every month or so, we promote stable and complete features from the Dev channel to the Beta channel. The Beta channel is more stable than Dev, but may lack the polish one expects from a finished product. If you’re writing extensions, you need to use this channel or the Dev channel.
Dev channel. This developer preview channel is where ideas get tested (and sometimes fail). The Dev channel can be very unstable at times, and new features usually require some manual configuration to be enabled. Still, simply using Dev channel releases is an easy (practically zero-effort) way for anyone to help improve Google Chrome.

I just changed from stable channel to dev channel, (4.1.249.1045 –> 5.0.371.0). It’s surprised that dev version is very stable. Here are a few reasons why I like Chrome

Clean, not tile bar, not status bar.
Faster, Chrome has much better performance than IE8.
Default page, most visited sites are shown in thumbnails.
Browse History Search, search sites from browse history is very easy.
Tabs, user can just drop a tab off to create a new chrome window. Also user can drag and drop tabs between chrome windows to better organize current viewed sites.
Favorite, Chrome provides an easy way to add site to favorite lists, but for managing and editing link, there is still room to improve.

WordPress 3.0 has a few great new features and improvement.

Ability to Choose Username When Installing WordPress

In previous version WordPress, default username for Admin is hard coded as admin. In WordPress 3.0, this secure hole is fixed, default user name can be customized when you install WordPress.

New default theme Twenty Ten

In WordPress 3.0, the default theme is replaced with a new theme named Twenty Ten. This is a good example theme for theme developers.

Enhanced Theme Management

In WordPress 3.0, a new tab is created for theme installation.

Customized Background

In WordPress 3.0, you will be able to change background by uploading your own images. Enable customized Background is as simple as just adding following line in function.php under the theme

add_custom_background();

Multisite Support

In WordPress 3.0, you now have the ability to create a network of sites. To enable the Network menu item, you must first define multisite in the wp-config.php file.

Open up wp-config.php and add this line

define (‘WP_ALLOW_MULTISITE’, true);

Once Multisite is enabled in wp-config.php, you will be able to create network from Tools –> Network.

Enhanced Export feature

In WordPress 3.0, there are more options for site export. Users are able to export posts for a certain data or a contain catalog/tag.

Also one feature still under construction is create customized menu. The UI development is not complement so it’s possible layout and functionality is changed in final release. There are also other improvements we will see when 3.0 is official released to public.

OneNote Snipping Tool

I previously used Alt+PrintScreen key for screenshots and then pasted into MSPaint and then edited the picture, and then capture just part of a screenshot. Now a better way is install Microsoft OneNote and take screenshot via the WinKey + S and then select the portion of the screenshot you want and paste anywhere.

Note: this option also available under menu “Insert” -> “Screen Clipping”

And yes, it’s better than Vista/Win7’s snipping tool in my option.

Burning ISO files to CD/DVD media

To burn .iso files on CD disks use cdburn utility

Usage:

: ISOFileName

Example:

cdburn e: d:\os\Win7_amd64.iso to burn the image on CD disk, where e: is CDROM

To burn .iso files on DVD disks use dvdburn utility

Usage:

dvdburn : ISOFileName

dvdburn : ISOFileName /Erase

Example:

dvdburn d: d:\os\Win7_amd64.iso to burn the image on DVD disk where e: is DVD

Both cdburn.exe and dvdburn.exe are part of Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit which can be downloaded here from Microsoft Download Center.

Update – Win7 now supports burning ISOs directly.

Right click on the ISO file
Click Burn disk image
