Earlier we mentioned that OneNote Sync is lived with SkyDrive. With SkyDrive people can save OneNote to SkyDrive directly and access it from any pc. But it used to impossible to access OneNote from iPhone due to technical safari limitations.

Today Microsoft releases Official OneNote for mobile completely free for a limited time. Following are detail feature descriptions copied from App Store.

Microsoft OneNote Mobile is the easy-to-use, powerful note-taking application for all of your ideas, brought to you by Microsoft Office. OneNote Mobile lets you create and view notes and lists whenever you need them. Sync your notes with free Windows Live online storage and access them from virtually anywhere using your phone, PC, or almost any web browser.
With OneNote Mobile, you can:
▪ Create flexible notes that can include text, pictures, bullets, and checkboxes
▪ Check To Do items off on the go
▪ Save time with quick access to your most recent notes
▪ Work with confidence—OneNote Mobile automatically syncs your notes with Windows Live in the background
▪ Organize your notes into sections or create new notebooks using OneNote 2010 or OneNote Web App and access them from your iPhone
Requirements:
▪ iPhone or iPod touch must have iOS 4.2 or higher
▪ A free Windows Live ID is required to use OneNote Mobile —use an existing one or let OneNote Mobile help you sign up
▪ Web functionality uses the free OneNote Web App available on Windows Live, which requires a supported web browser
▪ OneNote Mobile opens notebooks created in Microsoft OneNote 2010 or the OneNote Web App
▪ Customizing section colors requires Microsoft OneNote 2010

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4.2, you can download OneNote for iPhone from the Apple App Store.

Tips

OneNote is only available in US App Store right now so you need to have an US iTunes ID to download it.
FREE download for a limited time means the app won’t always be free. Download it now so you can get free update later.
The app works on iPad as well
You might wonder what Personal Web notebook is. It is the default notebook SkyDrive creates for users. Important: Do not rename this notebook. If this notebook is renamed in SkyDrive, the sync relationship is broken.

Issues

If you get 400 error when logon or sync, just keep trying, this is a known issue http://blogs.msdn.com/b/descapa/archive/2011/01/18/onenote-mobile-for-iphone-re-quot-loading-list-of-notebooks-failed-400-quot-error.aspx. For me, after five or six attempts it’s able to log in normally and syncs notebooks fine.
It seems OneNote only sync notebooks that are visible in SkyDrive. It can’t sync notebooks shared by my team members.

Update on 1/20: OneNote is now in the top 10 free apps but with a very bad rating, seems most of them have to do with 400 login error.

OneNote 2010 New Features

Office 2010 has a few great new features and improvements which make sharing and collaboration easier than ever.

OneNote Web Application

You can now create OneNote notebooks through web browsers and have other people to view, edit and collaborate anywhere. All notebooks created online will be saved to SkyDrive so you will need to have a Windows Live ID.

OneNote Web Application is free, just like other similar live service Microsoft has delivered over many years (hotmail, messenger). To get start with OneNote Web App, go to http://office.live.com and logon with your Windows Live ID. OneNote Web Application has familiar OneNote interface so you don’t have to learn it.

Sync to SkyDrive

(This feature is only available in OneNote 2010 RTM) When you creating new notebooks, you can save them to SkyDrive so they are available to you everywhere. You will need to upgrade notebook files to OneNote 2010 file format as only 2010 format is supported by SkyDrive.

Collaboration Improvement

There are many enhancement in OneNote 2010 that improves collaboration.

Green highlighting unread changes. The pages contain unread content will have bold text in tab and all unread content will be highlighted in green.
Author highlighting. Author name will be highlighted right to the content.
Recent Edits highlights what changed recently and what is new in yellow.
Version control. OneNote 2010 will keep version of every change that has been made and allows you to restore to older revisions. (Note: this requires OneNote 2010 file format)

Sync OneNote 2010 notebooks to SkyDrive

Start from OneNote 2010, when you creating new notebooks, you can save notebooks to SkyDrive directly so they are available to you everywhere.

How to synchronize OneNote and SkyDrive

On your PC, open OneNote 2010.
Go to the Notebook you want to enable sync, click on File > Share
Choose your Notebook and then click on the Sign In button and enter your Live ID(aka MSN/Hotmail/XBox ID)
Once you sign in, click on the Share Notebook button in the lower right. It will upload your notebook to your Skydrive
Now notebooks will be automatically synced among different OneNote clients if they are online.

Access it anywhere – from another PC

On OneNote 2010 desktop client, click File –> Share you will find a link of the shared notebook, sent it to another pc and open it in OneNote 2010, you will be asked to sign in with Live ID.

Update at 12/1/2011, Microsoft has released a free update for OneNote 2010 which allow you to open which open OneNote documents stored in SkyDrive from OneNote 2010 menu directly, without having to navigate to SkyDrive site or going to another pc client to copy the notebook share link. Access it anywhere – from browsers

Go to Office.live.com and sign in with your Live ID.

Access it anywhere – from mobiles

Download OneNote from App Store and install it. Sign in with your Live ID and then you start sync notebooks. Read OneNote for iPhone for more information.

Some more tips

In order to sync OneNote 2010 notebooks to SkyDrive and use OneNote Web Application, you will need have Internet Explorer 7 or later version installed.

Windows XP with IE8
Windows Vista with IE7 or IE8
Windows 7 with IE8

Also notebooks files from OneNote 2007 needs to be upgraded to OneNote 2010 file format as only 2010 format is supported by SkyDrive. You can convert old notebooks to 2010 format with following steps

File –> Info –> Setting –> Properties
Click ‘Convert to 2010’ button and press okay.

SkyDrive is Live with OneNote Sync

SkyDrive is live with OneNote Sync, you can now go to Office.live.com and start upload your OneNote files. Office Web Apps on SkyDrive are available free for personal use.

When you creating New Notebook in OneNote 2010, you can now save it to SkyDrive directly. To get start, you will need to have a Windows Live ID, and sign in when you are asked to. Notebooks will be automatically synced among different OneNote clients if they are online.

You can also create other types of office documents on Office.live.com directly, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint

Troubleshot Tips

We are sorry. This service is currently not available

This is because you are using a pre-release version (either BETA or RC). OneNote Sync with SkyDrive only works with OneNote 2010 RTM edition. Upgrade to OneNote 2010 and you should no longer see this message.

Unable to connect to Windows Live SkyDrive

Open IE, go to IE Internet Options, clear browse history, passwords, cookies. And then retry.

OneNote System Tray Icon Reappears

System tray icon reappears every time OneNote is started, how to turn it off?

Turn off OneNote System Tray Icon

Go to File, click options, and then click display tab, uncheck Place OneNote Icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar.

Note: Turn of OneNote icon in taskbar also turn off OneNote Snap Tool, if you wish to use Windows key + S to bring up OneNote Snap Tool to capture screenshot, you will need to have option Place OneNote Icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar marked.

Update 5-22 The equivalent in OneNote 2007 is Go to Tools, and click Other and then uncheck Place OneNote Icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar

Turn on OneNote System Tray Icon

Change Place OneNote Icon in the Notification Area of the Taskbar option back to marked will get OneNote System Tray Icon back.

OneNote Is Unable To Start

You might see OneNote failed to start with following error message displayed

OneNote is unable to start. This may be caused by insufficient hard drive space or by insufficient write permissions for OneNote’s notebook cache files in you user setting folder. Try to delete any unnecessary files from your computer and then try starting OneNote again. If this message persists, contact your system administrator. Error code: 0x45D

Solution for OneNote 2007

Open explorer and go to folder %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\12.0\
Rename OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache to OneNoteOfflineCache.onecache.bak
Start OneNote again.

Note: you might need to mark view hidden files and folders to see the folder in step #1.

Update

May 17 – Some of you ask how to fix this in OneNote 2010 so here is it. For OneNote 2010, change the folder in step #1 to

%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\OneNote\14.0\

and the rest steps are same.

OneNote Snipping Tool

I previously used Alt+PrintScreen key for screenshots and then pasted into MSPaint and then edited the picture, and then capture just part of a screenshot. Now a better way is install Microsoft OneNote and take screenshot via the WinKey + S and then select the portion of the screenshot you want and paste anywhere.

Note: this option also available under menu “Insert” -> “Screen Clipping”

And yes, it’s better than Vista/Win7’s snipping tool in my option.

Onenote 2010 Highlight Unread Changes

OneNote 2010 has a new feature, it remembers notes you’ve read and highlights new changes since you last read. All new unread content on pages will be highlighted with green highlight. This is very helpful for people who use OneNote for team collaboration. Everyone can easily see what exactly others has added and/or contributed. The pages contain unread content will have bold text in tab and all unread content will be highlighted in green.

OneNote: Unread Highlighting cannot be cleared

I recently upgraded to Office 2010 BETA and I notice an annoy bug in OneNote 2010.

There is a feature in OneNote 2010 which will highlight unread content after notes are synced between two PCs. However, it can’t detect whether those content is read or not so the green highlighting will stay there forever.

The workaround is right-clicking on the notebook and choosing to Mark as Read. By doing this you tell OneNote I read it and please remove the green highlighting. This also makes unread bolding go away.
