Windows Live Essentials Beta is released

Windows Live Essentials Beta is released

Today Microsoft announces releasing the Windows Live Essentials Beta, which include new versions of Messenger, Photo Gallery, Movie Maker, Sync, Live Writer and more You can download it from http://explore.live.com/windows-live-essentials-beta. New Windows Live Essentials Beta is integrated with Office Live, aka Office Web Apps. You can share and collaborate on Office documents at http://office.live.com with your Windows Live ID. I have tried save my OneNote 2010 notebooks to SkyDrive and it works great. And with the new Windows Live Sync, you are able to keep your files synchronized across multiple PCs and in the cloud.

Windows Live Writer 4 New Features

Windows Live Writer is the most popular blog client tool. Microsoft recently released Windows Live Writer 4 as part of new Windows Live Essentials Beta launch. I tried it and it looks great. Here is what’s new.

New Ribbon UI

Live Writer 4 has same Ribbon style menu as Office 2010. Actually this applies to other Windows Live wave 4 products, Live Mail, Photo Gallery etc.

Picture Tool, Photo Album Tools and Video Tools

In Live Writer 4, all options to format a picture are moved to Picture Tool. When you select a picture, format tab of Picture Tool will show up in ribbon menu. You don’t need to switch between different tabs when you add watermark or change picture style.

Photo Album Tools and Video Tools are also really straight forward.

New Default Photo Album Style Squares

A new album style called Squares is added and is the default album template.

View All

A view all link is added to top right next to date option. If you click View all, Live Writer 4 will bring up a floating Post Properties dialog in which you can update all post options supported by your blog app.

Auto Paste URL from clipboard

If you have a link URL on the clipboard, Live Writer 4 will paste it to to web address textbox when you bring up the insert hyperlink dialog. This is the greatest feature I like in Live Write 4.

Auto Correct

In Live Writer 3, thanks to Spell Checker, all misspelled words will be underlined with red line. This is enhanced in Live Writer 4, if you have a obvious typo for example, teh, live writer will automatically correct it to the, this is very similar to Outlook 2010.

Auto Recover

If Live Writer exits unexpected or crashed, next time it’s launched, you will have the option to recover the last post.

Show Log File link

Find Live Write log is pretty easy in wave 4. Just go to About Windows Live Writer dialog and simple click the “show log file” link.

Error 0×80070643 When Install Windows Live Essentials

When you try to install a Windows Live program, for example, Windows Live Messenger, the Windows Live Essentials installation fails with following error code 0×80070643. This issue occurs because a previous installation puts the computer in a state where a restart is pending.

To resolve this issue, restart the computer, and then reinstall Windows Live Essentials.

Click the Download button. When the file download dialog box pops up, click Run to start the Installation Wizard

Install Windows Live Messenger on 64bit Windows XP and Server 2003

Windows Live Messenger cannot be installed on Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP Professional x64 Edition. It seems that these OS are blocked in Windows Live Messenger setup.

Eventually I found this blog Install Windows Live Messenger 2009 from .msi files. The instruction on this page works well on windows server 2003. It also works on other unsupported OS such as x64 windows XP and windows server 2008
